The Space Heater of the Gods is difficult to control under the best of circumstances. Nebraska winters tempt the user to set the heater to “11,” which is just asking for trouble. In this case, the beam blasted through the roof and was visible from North Dakota.

Titanic, April 15, 2012

The Luxor has a great exhibit about the Titanic, and a big model of the ship in the lobby. I can't countenance pulling personal artifacts from an ocean grave, but I took a look. One hundred years, almost to the day, since the sinking, and it's a haunting experience to look at the iron hull, the china, and the personal effects of people who died there.

Growth on Highway 61, April 20, 2011

Worm's eye view of old Highway 61 and the organic material protruding through the asphalt. I'm not a fan of the horizontal bits on the left and should have pushed them aside. But I like the monumental feeling of the main bush, and the orderly yellow line making its way to the horizon.

Pilings on Flathead Lake, Somers, Montana, July 30, 2010

It was a rainy morning on the shore of Flathead Lake in Somers. I was pleased to find this scene with old pilings, birds, boats, and mountains in the distance. The scene was monochromatic, and I pushed that further with a blue-tone treatment.

The drive-in movie screen eventually disappeared completely, but for a long time you could drive past this on Highway 20 and see a bygone era. This would have been the snack stand or bathrooms or projection booth or all of the above, now shown in stark black and white with some nice clouds across the sky. Once again we have a triangular arrangement of elements to strengthen the structure of the composition, with the tree providing a path from ground to sky.

Farm Ruins, Dixon County, July 22, 2003

I was invited to photograph an old farm, and spent a couple days photographing in and out of the buildings. There was plenty of variety in the levels of decay throughout. This scene shows some interior and exterior, with wonderful diffused light. I was shooting on C-41 monochrome film, so focused only on texture and tonality. I like the organic shapes of the strings contrasting with the straight lines of the wooden structure.
