Fog in the Nebraska National Forest, May 28, 2020

I woke up early and decided to visit the Black Hills Overlook at sunrise. The drive out proved foggy, and the fog remained through sunrise, drifting in and out as I slowly hiked along the trail, taking as many photos as I could. This is my San Francisco kind of scene, with the radio tower poking up above the fog below it. I worked on a triangle composition, with the foreground tree, middle arch, and background tower. The fog provides creamy pink colors to go with the dark green grass and orange rocks and grass. Quite an interesting morning in a region that doesn't get much fog.

Rainy Day at Fort Robinson, October 7, 2018

Rainy weather near Red Cloud Buttes in Fort Robinson State Park, October 2018. (Photo by Daniel Binkard)
Following some fun fall color shooting up in the Black Hills, the rain caught up with western Nebraska and flattened out the landscape. I wanted to get outside anyway, and drove out to Fort Robinson State Park. It was quickly apparent that this windy mist would just cover my lens in a fine spritz, so I took a handful of shots and called it a day (but not before getting a snack at the Staabs food stand, which is the rule). This is a shot that has plenty of detail in the power lines, and a car hiding in the mist. There's something about the subtle detail that fog allows, and I kick myself whenever we get fog out in western Nebraska and I don't try for some sort of photo. Even if it's a quick grab, it's satisfying to work with fog.

Normally, I wouldn't put four photos up, but these serve to illustrate the varied weather that can be found in Custer State Park as fall in the mountains gets cold. A day that started with light drizzle turned to snow, which adds a fun layer of texture to the mountain scenes. It's another kind of day that I need to repeat, especially as a means of capturing the aspen and birch trees of the area. But is it an aspen or a birch?

Storm Clearing at the Grand Canyon, December 24, 2012

When I arrived at the canyon the second day of my visit, I was greeted with a short blizzard. The large scale of the canyon makes for plenty of localized weather patterns that are visible for miles. After the blizzard cleared from the south end, there were great clouds and shadows in the north canyons, and plenty of warm tones as the sun set. As always, it's difficult to show the large and small details at once, so this composition focuses on the various lines created by overlapping cliffs and shadows cast through the clouds.

I’m passing through Grand Teton National Park and it’s a beautiful foggy day. This is Mount Moran, emerging from the mist and anchored by Jackson Lake and a line of trees. The mountain being half visible makes it look even larger.

Pilings on Flathead Lake, Somers, Montana, July 30, 2010

It was a rainy morning on the shore of Flathead Lake in Somers. I was pleased to find this scene with old pilings, birds, boats, and mountains in the distance. The scene was monochromatic, and I pushed that further with a blue-tone treatment.
