Fog in the Nebraska National Forest, May 28, 2020

Fog rolls through the Nebraska National Forest at sunrise, May 2020. (Photo by Daniel Binkard)

I woke up early and decided to visit the Black Hills Overlook at sunrise. The drive out proved foggy, and the fog remained through sunrise, drifting in and out as I slowly hiked along the trail, taking as many photos as I could. This is my San Francisco kind of scene, with the radio tower poking up above the fog below it. I worked on a triangle composition, with the foreground tree, middle arch, and background tower. The fog provides creamy pink colors to go with the dark green grass and orange rocks and grass. Quite an interesting morning in a region that doesn't get much fog.

Mist on Black Elk Peak, September 17, 2017

My second hike up Black Elk Peak since 2004. I missed the mist at the top, but saw a bit of it partway up. There's a fair amount of post-processing to make the tones in this scene work. It starts off fairly low contrast, and there are any number of tonal adjustments possible. This may be a bit overcooked, but I'm going with it for now. I like the veiled appearance of the tower, even with all of this extra contrast.

The afternoon sun and broken clouds create a good environment for architecture, and Dallas certainly has some fun shapes to work with. This is a study in contrasting shapes — curves and lines, with organics to provide an anchor.
