Branch on the Water, October 13, 2019

A tree branch rests on the water at the Chadron Reservoir, October 2019. (Photo by Daniel Binkard)
A quiet evening down at the reservoir. I got the tripod way down toward the water, trying to avoid too much mud, to get this branch in the foreground. Otherwise, there wasn't too much on this part of the shore to work with. The fall colors were muted this year, but I got a few from the trees on the far shore to help me out. Plenty of color contrast from the blue sky to balance the warm tones on the shore. The silhouette and reflection of the branch creates the most interest for me, with some negative space to go with the reflection.

It was a fine fall day to explore the northern Black Hills. The overlook on the west end of Pactola Reservoir was full of color, and the variety of clouds in the sky provided a nice balance against the detail on the ground and water. This is a multi-frame panorama, and just between you and me, I did quite a bit of local adjustment to deal with lens flare circles in the left half of the scene. Sometimes I'm OK with a little flare, but this scene called for a cleaner presentation. I was pleased with the low-lying red bushes in the foreground to go with the rough rocks. The small peninsula down at the bottom adds some curvy interest to that far shoreline. It would be another year before I ventured down to that far shoreline, and it's got plenty of interesting rock shards to play with.

Moonset at Whitney Lake, August 5, 2016

I was planning some astrophotography at Whitney Lake, and arrived at the last bit of sunset and moonset. The moon was cooperative, posing above the dock and in line with a couple other celestial bodies. The dock is lit by the streetlight that is also cooperatively at the shore. It’s so nice when the elements work with you. Indeed, my camera was cooperative, taking the photo just as my finger pushed the shutter release button. And later, my software made the various tonal edits just as my fingers happened to brush against the mouse and keyboard. That camera sure does take good pictures.

Fishing on the Jetty at Ocean Shores, Washington, May 22, 2015

On clear day, the jetty at Point Brown, the south end of Ocean Shores, will have plenty of beachgoers combing the rocks, looking for rock things. On this dreary day, fishermen were out looking for fish things. I like the front most fisherman, standing at a jaunty angle on the rock, surrounded by water pounding the jetty around him. The monotone scene called for black and white; even in color it wouldn't show much.

Evening at the Needles, Haystack Rock, May 20, 2015

A long exposure at Haystack Rock, looking toward the Needles. I did some work to accentuate the monochromatic light and bring up the contrast between the rocks and the water. The water encircling the foreground rock further locks it as the primary element, and the background reflections connect front to back, giving an eyeline through the scene. I get a calm feeling from the blues and soft shapes of the water, but at the same time a sense of foreboding from the dark tones.

Surfers at Devils Punch Bowl, May 18, 2015

Surfers walk toward the water near Devils Punch Bowl State Natural Area, May 2015. (Photo by Daniel Binkard)

From the cliff overlooking Devils Punch Bowl and the accompanying shoreline, you can see patterns in the sand and water from a distance, along with beach goers. This minimalist composition explores negative space—but is the negative space the incoming water, or the water farther up the shore? I like the near surfer crossing the line from one space to the next, while the farther surfer creates his own line in the water. Timing is key for people on the move: The position of their legs should imply their forward motion, and I was able to catch strong V-shapes in both surfers to suggest that movement.
