Stick Insects at Chadron State Park, July 2020

Before this summer, I hadn't come across stick insects outside of museums. Perhaps they've passed over my shoes on previous occasions when I've been crouched in odd positions trying to photograph flowers against rock faces. These little fellows look awkward and beautiful. It's great to see them up close, and a reminder to carry that 105mm closeup lens more often.

The Roman elite communicated through a complex system of horns. The richest Roman nobility could exchange information at the equivalent of a 14.4 modem. Most of this information consisted of explicit renderings. Las Vegas, Nevada, April 2013. (Photo by Daniel Binkard)

Walking the Dog, Arcadia Beach, July 2 2012

A beachgoer walks her dog near Lion Rock at Arcadia Beach State Recreation Site in July 2012. (Photo by Daniel Binkard)

My first visit to Arcadia Beach was at low tide, making for great access to the rocks and tide pools on the shore. I had my infrared camera and this was a good spot to show the contrast of the rocks and organisms. The lady and her dog finish the scene and provide some scale, while the tide pools in the foreground provide depth.

Riders in the Dust, September 9, 2011

Rodeo in Chadron, Nebraska, September 2011. (Photo by Daniel Binkard)

Before the rodeo started, the evening sun was glowing through a wall of dust that was kicked up by the riders as they moved up and down the dirt path beside the arena. I took several shots, which showcase the different movements and actions of the riders. The dust acts like a fog, obscuring most detail except for the shapes of the horses and riders. It was a beautiful scene.

Clearing the Roof, Ponca, Nebraska, February 1, 2002

There was a big drift of snow peering over the edge of the roof, and who could resist clearing it off? Dave took the shovel and gently tapped the underside, causing the bulk of the overhanging snow to come crashing down. This is a precursor to my girl jumping off a column photo from 2006. My favorite part is the dog preparing to dive away from the snow (he was out of the line of fire, fortunately).
