Black Hills, September 2020

My September trip to Spearfish Canyon and some of the nearby areas finds the beginnings of fall colors. I have finally made my way to the Devils Bathtub, which is a beautiful place in the early morning.

When I look at my past photos from Dinosaur Hill in Rapid City, I think that I need to get back up there, posthaste! This was an afternoon shoot, with the sun somewhat low to give some dimension to the landscape. The first photo is a compressed perspective view across the hill toward the larger hills in the distance. It's the power lines dividing — and connecting — the hills that I like. They act as a bridge to the middle and background planes. The second photo is a double exposure with a focus shift for the near trees and distant cityscape. As with many photos that use this technique, the image is jarring at first, but I keep coming back to it and enjoying the blurred details.

Every so often I see an arrangement of grass in the snow, or in some ice, and I think I'd better photograph it. Usually it doesn't quite work, but I like this simple set of lines and poofs. The texture of the snow adds plenty of detail in addition to the stronger lines of the grass.
